Question & Answer

COMPARISON OF CONVENTIONAL SOLAR CELL AND NANOPAC DSC CELL (DSC)

Raw Materials : Amorphous  Silicon (a-Si) , Cd Te (Cadmium  Telluride)
Cd Te is a  toxic material and most countries have banned such substances for product manufacturing.
Raw Materials : Nano Sized Hybrid TiO2.

TiO2 is a green material and has been used in food industry with the approval of FDA (food & Drug Agency USA).

Efficiency : 15~18%
20 years old technology and almost at its peak in terms of technological advancement
Efficiency : 6~10% (future 15~20%)
Very new technology and lots of future potential which have not been completely explore
Cost: Relatively high and future development still uncertain on cost reduction.
Major cost is due to the vacuum technology.
Cost: High initial but eventually target to be 1/5 of the existing cost of solar cell.
Simple production process does not require any vacuum technology.
Is not fully transparent and it has to rely on full exposure of sun lights to achieve the 100% efficiency. Fully and semi transparent and does not require full exposure to sun lights to achieve the 100% efficiency.
Can only generate electricity through single side exposure. Both sides can generate electricity when exposed to sun light or light.
Cannot generate electricity during cloudy day Can generate electricity during cloudy day
Cannot generate electricity through artificial lights or visible light like florescent lamp Can generate electricity through artificial lights or visible lights.
Installation would require fixed large install space like farm or roof top.  Installation can be fitted to existing interior design like window glass because it is fully or semi  transparent and it can provide added  benefits to shade sun light
Due to above, limited space is the main issue. Therefore, manufactures keep improving the efficiency. Due to the above, efficiency would not be the main obstacle because space of installation are ample.
Not light weight except thin film type Light weight due to simple constructions
Future improvements – Thin film type Future improvements – fully flexible thin film type with full or semi transparency

1. Why NANOPAC Nano Solar Cell Technology (NSC) ?

Existing solar cell in the PV markets is using Amorphous  Silicon  Solar Cell (a-Si) or Cd Te (Cadmium Telluride).  2nd generation Solar cell is thin film and dominated by Cd Te based and it is a very toxic chemical compound. These are all non transparent solar panel. Full commercialization of thin film solar cells is still underway as more R&D is required before it is possible in mass productions.

Only Nanopac Solar Cell technology can be fully or semi transparent and fully flexible on plastic film.

Thin film Cd Te based system technically cannot be transparent on plastic film. Nanopac Nano Solar Cell (NSC) is completely different from these thin film Solar cells due to the technology that we adopt to produce it and the green materials used.

For most Building Integrated Photovoltaic System (BIPV), NSC technology is the best and most proper options in terms of saving space and provides more surface area for generation of power due to its unique feature of transparency where it can be retrofitted into the window of the building. On top of it, it can also generate electricity through visible light (like florescent light) beside sun lights.

2. How Can Nanopac Nano Solar Cell be competitive and Cost effective?

Nanopac core technology lies in its Intellectual Property (IP), where we have developed 2 of the main raw materials Nano Sized Hybrid Material Paste and Nano Ink which are required in the construction of the Nanopac Solar Cell. For competitors to enter into this market, firstly they need to license our IPs in order to be able to produce. In this way, we are in much better position in terms of cost competitiveness.

3. Is the technology been certified?

NSC is a proven technology as it is based Dye Sensitive Solar Cell (DSSC) platform. Many big players like Samsung, LG, Sony and Dyesol are already in R&D to produce DSSC for demonstration and testing but none are in commercial market due to some limitation in the DSSC platform. Due to the promising potential, these big corporate groups are already in the race to source for better raw materials and new technology to meet their commercialization plan.

Nanopac has the advantages because we have developed the best Nano Hybrid Materials paste and Nano Ink which are the most important raw materials for construction of NSC technology. Our Nano Hybrid Material paste is the cheapest and high quality in the markets and it was certified, tested and used by few government research Institute in Korea like Korean Institute of Ceramic Engineering and Technology.

4.  What is the potential of this new technology and benefits to the consumer?

Nanopac Nano Solar Cell  technology are ready and demand for such system came at the right time mainly due to the new renewal energy board policy passed by the Many Asian Government. As we can see in the diagram below, thin film technology (non transparent) are not fully commercialized as indicated in Yellow below.

Main obstacles that hampered the growth of solar panel are its efficiency and large area space for installations and even with thin film technology this two problems would still exist. With Nanopac Nano Solar Cell, efficiency would be complemented by larger area of installation through building window. Eventually, the main benefits to the consumer would be cheaper to install when it reaches its economic of scale.
